Pipeline Slugging Review

Located in the Poleng field near Madura island, East Java, the Poleng Processing Platform (PPP) is linked to a series of wellhead platforms via subsea pipelines.

The client had reported the occurrence of regular slugging on one of the pipelines connected to PPP. This was flagged as an issue as the MP separator on PPP was not designed to handle large regular slugs.


Synergy's Scope of Work

Synergy was engaged to confirm the slugging phenomenon experienced at PPP and model it in flow assurance software to understand the cause and behaviour of the slugs.

The scope also included recommending potential measures to mitigate the pipeline slugging issue.

Key Project Archievements

  1.  Accurately modelled the pipeline slugging behaviour in OLGA software, with the simulation results closely aligned to field observations. 
  2. Client implemented the recommendations leading to the successful mitigation of the slugging phenomenon.
  3. Recommended a simple and inexpensive mitigation measure to reduce pipeline slugging.
